Porcelain Crowns

You might need a crown if you have a tooth that's cracked, broken, or severely worn down. Teeth that have had root canals need crowns to protect them since they're more fragile after the nerve is removed. Large fillings that take up more than half the tooth often need a crown for reinforcement.

Sometimes crowns are used for cosmetic reasons to cover severely discolored teeth or improve the shape of misshapen teeth. They're also placed on dental implants to complete the tooth replacement.

Brush twice a day and floss daily, paying special attention to where the crown meets your gum line. This is where plaque can build up and cause decay on the natural tooth structure underneath the crown.

Avoid chewing on very hard objects like ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels. Don't use your teeth to open packages. These habits can crack or chip the porcelain. If you grind your teeth at night, wear a night guard to protect both your crown and your natural teeth.

Come in for regular cleanings and checkups every six months. Dr. Morgan will check your crown to make sure it's still fitting properly and that the tooth underneath stays healthy. Catching small problems early prevents bigger issues later.

With good care, your porcelain crown can last 15 to 20 years or longer. Many patients never need their crowns replaced.
