ORAL SEDATION
In Richardson, TX
Dental anxiety shouldn't keep you from receiving the care you need. At Ellem Dental in Richardson, TX, Dr. Lily Morgan offers oral sedation to help nervous patients achieve a deeper level of relaxation. Whether you are avoiding the chair or have complex needs, we ensure your experience is calm and stress-free.
THE gentle PATH TO RELAXATION

For a more profound sense of calm, Dr. Morgan prescribes anti-anxiety medication taken prior to your visit to significantly reduce or eliminate dental fear. This method often results in reduced memory of the procedure, allowing us to complete extensive treatment safely while we carefully monitor your vitals in a warm, relaxed environment.
IS ORAL SEDATION right FOR YOU?
This deeper sedative option is ideal for patients whose anxiety requires more than light relaxation to feel comfortable during their care.
Moderate Anxiety
This choice is perfect for those whose fear of the dentist has made them hesitant to book even routine dental visits.
Extensive Treatment
If you require multiple procedures, this allows us to complete more work in a single, comfortable appointment.
Memory Relief
This is highly suitable for patients who prefer to have little to no memory of their dental procedure once it is finished.
The Oral Sedation Process
Oral sedation is a simple, pill-based way to help you feel deeply relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment.
Request an appointmentStep 1: Consultation & Planning
We discuss your anxiety level, medical history, and treatment needs. Dr. Lily Morgan confirms oral sedation is safe and right for you, and answers all your questions.
Step 2: Pre-Appointment Instructions
You'll receive easy guidelines: take the prescribed pill(s) about 1 hour before your appointment (sometimes the night before for longer procedures), arrange a ride home, avoid food/drink for a few hours prior, and wear comfortable clothing.
Step 3: Arrival & Preparation
When you arrive, we welcome you to our calm office. We review how you're feeling, take baseline vital signs, and make sure you're ready. You'll already feel the relaxation starting from the pill.
Step 4: Treatment Under Sedation
Once the sedation takes effect (usually within 30–60 minutes), you're deeply relaxed—often drowsy, with little to no memory of the procedure. You remain conscious and able to respond, but the appointment feels like it passes quickly. We monitor you throughout.
Step 5: Recovery & Discharge
Effects linger for several hours after treatment. You'll rest briefly, then a companion drives you home. Most people feel back to normal by the next morning. We provide clear post-care instructions and follow up to check on you.
Step 6: Follow-Up
We schedule a quick check-in (in-person or phone) to ensure you're comfortable and healing well. Any minor adjustments to future sedation are made based on your experience.
faqs
Oral sedation uses safe, prescription pills (usually from the benzodiazepine family) taken before your appointment to create deep relaxation. You stay awake and responsive but feel very calm, often with little or no memory of the treatment—perfect for anxiety, gag reflex, or longer procedures.
Yes—it's one of the safest and most commonly used sedation methods in dentistry. We review your full medical history, allergies, and medications first, and monitor you during treatment. Side effects are minimal and rare when dosed correctly.
You'll be awake but extremely relaxed—many patients describe it as a dream-like state with little awareness. You can respond to simple instructions, but most remember very little (or nothing) afterward.
The peak relaxation lasts during your appointment (1–4 hours depending on dose and treatment). You may feel drowsy or groggy for several hours after, so plan to rest the rest of the day. Full effects wear off by the next morning for most people.
No—you must have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. The medication impairs coordination and judgment, even if you feel "fine." Nitrous oxide is the only option that allows driving afterward.
